Reactions After First Episodes: Dexter and Californication
Well, I took the plunge and gave myself both HBO and Showtime as a Christmas present, so I should be able to ride out the Writers' Strike for a while checking out all of the HBO and Showtime series. I started last night with the pilot episodes of Dexter and Californication. Here's my quick take...
Dexter Considering the somewhat-disturbing nature of the show's premise, I really enjoyed the pilot ep. I have a good feeling about this one, and I think I'm going to really like catching up with this show. (Thank you NetFlix and Showtime OnDemand!). Michael C. Hall was great as a character that could not be more of a 180-degree-turn from his character on Six Feet Under. And it was great to see Julie Benz again!
Californication: Um, so, does this show get any better? I wasn't really digging it. The gratuitous nudity was a little, well, gratuitous. And I just felt dirty seeing once-little Gracie from the Nanny topless. My how she's grown.
I'll be checking out Weeds, Brotherhood, The Wire, Extras, and others in the next few weeks.

My how she's grown.
It's funny how that works!
I watched Dexter Season One on a special viewing and I loved it. I have since been looking for a good buy on the DVD Boxset - it is worth another look!
I haven't watched Californication yet, but I do like David Duchovney!
I think that you will really enjoy HBO. I am really looking forward to the new series starting in 08 called Daybreakers. It stars Ethan Hawke and it is set in the year 2017. It's about a plague that has turned most everyone on Earth into a vampire.

Well Rod, I don't know if Californication gets any better, I pretty much stopped watching halfway through the first episode.
As for Dexter...it's okay.

Dexter truly is great, as for Californication, it's alright, but I wouldn't go around recommending it

Hey Rod!
You know, I've seen both of these, and I gotta say, neither one really tripped my trigger. Of the two, I liked Dexter better, but I just felt kind of creepy watching a show where the protagonist is a serial killer. At the end of the day, I just couldn't get behind it.
Californication is just too over the top for me. I loved David Duchovny in The X-Files, but the sex, sex, sex just doesn't work for me. (I know- who'da thunk?!) It's obviously there just to be there, and for no good storyline reason.
So I have to say "meh" to both of them. *shrug*
Oh, BTW- completely unrelated to this blog but I'll throw it in anyway- I finally broke down and bought Friday Night Lights S1 on DVD and did a marathon session and watched the entire season in 3 days. My thoughts?
DAMN!!! Why the @#$!%# wasn't I watching this show last season? It is fantastic! Man, from the relationship between Coach and Tami to Riggins warming up to goofy Bo (loved when he saved the kid from the bullies!) and all the storylines in between, what a great show!
Thanks again for turning me on to it- I had a great few days catching up!

Dexter is great- must see tv!
I'd tell you what I think about Californication, but tvguide.com keeps telling me my very clean post is objectionable and they won't post it.
Weeds was great the first season, very good the second season, I don't know what they were thinking the third season, and I'm not sure I'll tune in for the remaining seasons.

Hey, Rod! I'll be interested in your thoughts as you watch Dexter. Blockbuster has it.
Speaking of which - my rates are going up - again - after cutting my benefit in half - so I'm seriously thinking of switching to Netflix. Anything I should know? Any reason I shouldn't make the change?

The gratuitous nudity was a little, well, gratuitous. And I just felt dirty seeing once-little Gracie from the Nanny topless.
I watched the first two or three episodes of Californication and that was pretty much my reaction, too. I heard the storylines got better later, but I didn't stick around to find out. It had its clever moments, but overall it was just kind of "blah" to me.
