Monday Quickies (Bones, Mother, Gossip, Big Bang, Samantha, Miami)
Mondays are back in full force, with way too many good shows crowded into one night. Thanks to DVRs and insomnia, I was able to catch my full line-up last night. Here are some really quick, knee-jerk reactions to the shows that I watched...
Bones
• The head exploding through the vent all over Cam, Zack, and Hodgins... hysterical
• The "new" Cam/Angela scenes... I thought they worked pretty well
• The Bones/Booth dynamic in this episode... top notch
• Bones saving the guy from shooting himself... a great moment (I really thought that the guy was going to off himself)
• Bones' dismay at the quality of today's higher education system... funny, but also sadly true
Gossip Girl
• Jenny losing herself in pursuit of the in-crowd... it was sad and tough to watch
• Jenny turning her back on Dan and using Nate... just made it all that much worse
• Chuck not being an ass... a nice change of character (we'll see if it lasts)
• The set-up for the next "big bad" to rock S's world... I'm very intrigued
• Dawn Ostroff's comments that Gossip Girl is the new face of the CW... don't get me started; you can see my rant on Gab's blog.
How I Met Your Mother
• The new Robin Sparkles video... hysterical
• Barney and Robin giving in to their undeniable chemistry... I'm surprisingly ok with it.
• James Van Der Beek's comedic talents... eh, not too bad (on par with Brit's at least)
• The Australian/Swedish accents... they were supposed to be Canadian, right?
The Big Bang Theory
• The addition of Sara Gilbert as Leonard's nemesis... always a welcome return
• The continuing lack of substance to Penny's character... it's getting old
• Wolowitz stealing almost every scene he is in... as usual (that character is too funny!)
CSI: Miami
• A vigilante who is killing pedophiles... I agree with Erik: why get in his way?
• The show continuing to try and make Horatio an action hero/ bad-ass... give it up already, CBS.
• Erik/Calleigh goodness... completely absent (boo!)
• The broken leg bone protruding out of the dead body... gross
Samantha Who
• Sam kissing Todd then throwing him to the ground... loved it. (I'm still rooting for these two to find each other again)
• Dena and Sam's boss... it was nice to see Dena getting some action that made her happy
• "New Sam" continuing to use/manipulate Dena... when will this end?

Hi Rod,
It's nice to see a recap blog from you again. Thanks.
Bones - The head exploding through the vent all over Cam, Zack, and Hodgins... hysterical
I loved expression on Cam's face.
I was also laughing at Angela admiring herself while watching the sex tape. Love her.
HIMYM - First of all, let me get this off my chest. As a native of Canada, I'm tired of hearing Americans mimic Canadian speech by saying oot and aboot for out and about. Listen up, kids--it's oat and aboat.
As for the video--lovely shots of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica mountains. Where exactly in Canada were they supposed to be?
The Australian/Swedish accents... Is that what they were? In any case, they didn't sound like any of my relatives.
Barney and Robin? Wow, that was a surprise. Is this how Aunt Robin got to be Aunt Robin?
Samantha Who? is still sitting on my DVR.

Hi Rod! It's nice to see you. You know, I don't know if I'm gonna get used to bones on monday. I completely forgot about it last night! I'll have to try to remember to watch online before next week.
Mother was great. I wish I hadn't read any spoilers though. It would have been more fun to now know what was coming. Robin turning in to a teenager and Lily and Marshall turning in to parents was hilarious. And lily around her friend michelle. I guess there was more to like than I thought there was. I need to watch again.
I've never wanted barney and robin together. I hope it's a one time thing.
Barney and Robin? Wow, that was a surprise. Is this how Aunt Robin got to be Aunt Robin?
I'm guessing not. I've always referred to my mom's best friend and her husband as my aunt and uncle. Always. I just always took it to mean that they are best friends and as close as siblings.

It's a Rod blog! Yeay!
I only watched the first half of Bones, but I thought it was pretty good. Although I almost threw up when the rat and rat babies made an appearance. Just thinking about it I'm feeling a little queasy right now.
I so loved HIMYM. It was well worth the wait. I've also been secretly hoping Barney and Robin get together ever since they played paintball. I'll be happy with whatever direction the writers go with this new development, but I have to say, Barney was surprisingly sweet and supportive to her and that was a nice surprise too. It's nice to see that Barney isn't just a caricature of himself!
And I'm *still* singing Sandcastles in the Sand. Sandcastles wash away/And all that's left is some sand the next day. Kudos to Colbie for knocking that out of the park even though she's not a singer!
Marci, I'm pretty sure that's Malibu beach, but I don't know all the OC beaches, so maybe it's Newport or something? I was also wondering what Canadian beach this was supposed to be, but then I realized that it doesn't matter since it's a music video and all--it could've been a location shot for all we know. Because it's certainly not Lake Ontario!
The accents drove me nuts. Colbie is actually from Canada and her regular accent is more Canadian than her faked accent. But hers didn't bother me as much as James's. *scream* I thought he sounded Irish/Scottish rather than Ozzie or Swedish myself. Maybe they should've listened to a few hours of Bob and Doug before doing these scenes. On the other hand, maybe they DID listen to a few hours of Bob and Doug before doing these scenes and this is the result!
I only watched the first few minutes of Sam Who before I zonked out. Will watch it later. I'm totally rooting for New Sam and Todd to get together. And although I'm also annoyed that New Sam seems to treat Deena just as badly as Old Sam did, I have to admit that Deena has made an occupation out of being Sam's doormat, so she has some responsibility there too. Plus, she's awfully manipulative!

Rod! ~ Good to see you blogging!
Bones - Three things that stand out for me last night's ep. 1. ICK! 2. Sex Tape. 3. Milkshake mustache. So relieved this show is back.
Mother - I laughed so hard at this ep that I had to stop the dvr and contain myself a few times.
Big Bang - Last night wasn't the funniest ep, but still good for a couple of laughs.
Samantha and Gossip Girl are still on the dvr. You were so right about Monday's being back in full force.

Rod - great blog!
Bones was great! I loved the esploding skull in a turkey. But the best part to me was the Angie/Hodgy sex tape. Loved the fact that Angela had to watch it again "beacuase it was really good"!
Gossip Girl was great. It is so troubling to see a 15 year old girl be so infatuated with the filthy rich! And how about that $100+ dollar lunch! Are you kidding me? Blair vs Jenny is developing into a great war!
CSI Miami is really pissing me off. I watch this show for its comedic over-the-top acting, but I expect some accuracy seeing as it is a procedural cop show! Right off the bat, they show the car running down the guy, then say that it was leaking bio-diesel? Are you kidding me? It was so obviously a gasoline powered car. Couldn't they at least dub in some diesel engine noice? And the final scene with Horatio about to give the pedophile a beat-down for resisting arrest? Come on now!

Hi Rod! Good to see you!
I only watch Samantha Who and HIMYM last night.
HIMYM~ Hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing. I'm surprised you didn't mention Lily and Michelle. That was great. I liked Robin and Barney together, but what makes Barney so funny is how he treats women. I can't see him settling down.
Sam~ I didn't like this episode as much, but I loved the ending.

I'm pretty sure that's Malibu beach, but I don't know all the OC beaches,
Famin - It has to be a Santa Monica or Malibu beach. I know that coastline and it wouldn't have appeared that way from an OC beach.
As for the accent, I know that Colbie is from Canada and she should have known better and made an attempt to make her and James's accents more authentic. I know Americans like to make fun of how Canadians talk, and that was probably the intent of the director, but still...
I just finished watching my recording of Samantha Who?. It's a fun episode with all kinds of good stuff--Mr. Chapman (he cracks me up), the doorman (he cracks me up too), Sam sticking up for the environment and quitting her job in the process, and kissing Todd and then throwing him on the ground. Loved it!

I just rewatched the full Sandcastles in the Sand music video on CBS.com. We actually didn't get to see it all on the show, so I'm glad to be able to watch it again!
Mother was great. I wish I hadn't read any spoilers though.
Sorry Leah!
Marci, I think you're right. That has to be Malibu. Can't you just picture Baywatch there? I know they filmed at Malibu.
Maybe the point was that they wanted to exaggerate the accents so they did to a point it didn't even sound Canadian anymore. Either way, as a joke it fell flat. Although, it was a risk in my book because James van der Beek has a lot of trouble doing accents (I'm cringing remembering that football movie he did).
I also just remembered the name of Simon's band. The Four Skins (or maybe The Foreskins). Ted: How'd you come up with that? Simon: Well, there's four of us and we play with no shirts on.

Thanks for posting the video, Famin. I love the line, "It was the greatest week and a half of my life." I used to love to go for drives up PHC to Oxnard and back--this was when gas was 30+ cents a gallon. Anyone remember those days?
I had never seen James van der Beek in anything before. He was pretty funny as Simon. Love the name of his band and his explanation of how he came up with it.

Hi all!
Leah... As much as I still carry a torch for Ted/Robin (what can I say? they were awesome together), I've finally resigned myself to the fact that it's probably never going to happen; so I now find myself oddly comfortable with Barney/Robin... mainly because Barney was completely different with her: he was sweet and supportive - a side we rarely see. If Robin is the one to make Barney change his womanizing ways, I'm cool with that.
Famin... thanks for the link to the full video! It's freakin' hysterical, and I now have it completely ingrained in my brain for the rest of the day. (Good thing I voted first thing in the morning; I don't need to be humming "Sandcastles in the Sand" at the polls tonight!)
You also make a really good point about Dena on Samantha Who. She does allow herself to be a doormat (and, indeed, she has allowed this for years); so there's some responsibility there on her end as well. Good catch.
Hi Marci!... I don't know what it is about American television shows taking shots at Canada all the time... but it seems to happen quite often. James Van Der Beek's "accent" was atrocious, especially for someone who probably has a vocal coach!
Kath, Ranger... I can't believe I forgot to mention the sex tape on Bones last night. Angela re-watching it in her office was hilarious.
Ranger... Agree with you 100% about Caine and Miami.
April... Lily and Michelle were all kinds of awesome last night. Thanks for reminding me! I loved that they both were "regressing" (or whatever the word was) when they saw each other -- that was a great touch.

Thanks, Marci! Since this is the first time that a Pennsylvania presidential primary has effectively "mattered" in who knows how long, I definitely wanted to be a part of it.

Yay! Rod is back!
I agree with you about everything on Bones. The look on Cam's face after the turkey exploded was priceless. This was certainly a pretty gross episode, but I enjoyed it.
I agree with you about everything on Miami, too. Have you noticed in the post-strike episodes that Horatio has been doing actual lab work in a white coat and everything? It has been years since we've seen him do anything except take his sunglasses on and off and shoot people. I wonder what changed. That bone sticking out of the leg grossed me out, too; and I had watched Bones so you know it had to be bad for me to find it gross after that.
I haven't watched HIMYM yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
