The Mole: "Seven minus two is five!"

I don’t know how the rest of the Mole-verse feels, but I didn’t see much opportunity for Mole behavior last night. Neither of the challenges lent themselves to sabotage and I saw nothing to change my mind about my choice for the undercover mastermind.

Down to five players, they all talked about their suspicions and most involved Mark and Craig.

The first challenge, Go Figure, asked the group to divide into two teams: the Dumb Team and the Smart Team. Craig raised his hand to volunteer for Dumb and Nicole quickly volunteered to be Dumb also. She wanted to watch Craig more closely. This left Paul, Mark and Clay as the smart team.

Each team was given a map and sent out to find different areas of Mendoza. Once there, they had to figure out a math problem and, since they weren’t allowed to write down the answers, remember the correct number. The twist? The Smart Team had to do three, the Dumb Team “was dumb to pick the dumb team” because they had to do five.

They had a chance to put $30,000 in the pot but only if everyone made it back to the finish on time with the correct answers in 70 minutes.

At each location, the teams were given counting and basic math clues to decipher. The only real problem for the Smart Team came at the first location. At a fountain, the group was told to subtract the year Columbus landed in the new year from the year the fountain was inaugurated. So it was 1947-1492.

Mark quickly came up with the answer, 455. Clay insisted he was wrong. Saying that he was a math genius, Clay came up with a bizarre way to do the subtraction. He said it was 439. The two men argued.

Clay added 8 to 1492 to make it a whole number, 1500. THEN, it was easier to subtract the 1500 from 1947 which was 447. Finally, he subtracted the 8 that he originally added to the number and came up with 439.

Exasperated, Mark pointed out one big problem. “Seven minus two is FIVE!” Oh, okay. So on they went.

Craig and Nicole had little trouble although at one point Craig (IS THE MOLE) tried to change one of their answers. At another point he insisted on asking a local how many months there were on the Argentinian calendar (one of the questions) which made Nicole even more suspicious.

They had more clues to gather but their problems were a bit easier (with one exception) than the other team. It was at their last location that posed the real problem.

They had a huge number of things to count including little orange squares on 10 tiny stools. It took awhile for them to come up with the same answer but they finally agreed and made it back to the finish where they had to wait for the Smart team.

That group misread their map and ended up running blocks out of the way. Then they had to run back and still make it to the finish on time. They barely made it back. The answers had to be typed into a computer. Once entered only one number was incorrect, the last one put in by the Dumb Team.

They had come up with 228 and the computer flashed the 28 part meaning that the last two numbers were incorrect. One member of the Dumb Team was allowed to go back and recalculate. Nicole went and was given 20 minutes to get the job done. In the meantime, the men…in particular, Clay…tried to figure out if there was some sort of number sequence involved that would let them come up with the answer without Nicole.

Craig tried to stall, wanting to wait for Nicole. When she did come back (just in time) saying that it was 227 they all blew her off. It couldn’t have the 2 and be correct. Clay pulled 233 out of the air and it was correct. He had no idea how he came up with the answer but repeated that he was a math genius.

The pot stood at $281,000.

Mark saw Mole behavior in everyone. Paul got them lost. Clay messed up the numbers. Craig could have thrown the wrong numbers at Nicole. Nicole might have deliberately come back with the wrong numbers.

But Mark trusts Clay. Clay does NOT trust Mark. Mark thinks Nicole is the main suspect but has Craig (IS THE MOLE) as another possibility. Later, talking to Nicole, Clay found that she agreed with him that CRAIG IS THE MOLE…but then they wondered about Mark.

The next challenge could have been unbelievably cruel. After listening to the suspects talk about missing their families, they were informed that some of their loved ones were in Mendoza. Would they get to see them?

Yes, through the doors of an empty subway car. Would the doors open? That would depend on the person each of them trusted the most.

Jon asked each person who he/she trusted the most. That person was then given the task of asking 30 questions about a loved one to the person who trusted them. Then Jon would pick five of those questions at random. If the trusted person answered 3 of the 5 correctly, the family or friend got to come off the train.

This would have been a dead giveaway of the Mole and while I saw some suspicious behavior, everyone succeeded. Paul came off the most questionable when he seemed unable to come up with answers for a lot of the questions asked by Mark. But it worked out and he was able to see his very hot wife and gorgeous little girl.

The families/friends were entertaining. Nicole complained to her mom about being on the outside and feeling isolated. Mom told her to leave. This wasn’t her job. She HAD a job that she trained 8 years to do. If she wasn’t happy she should go home!

When Nicole said she didn’t like to quit things, her mom pointed out that she wasn’t quitting anything. Nicole then decided that she would self-execute herself on the quiz and go home. “A lady always knows when it’s time to go.”

Paul’s wife thought he might be the Mole. Clay’s wife didn’t think that HE was the Mole because she didn’t think he could hide it from her. Mark’s wife didn’t think he was but then jokingly asked him.

Craig’s girlfriend said he would either be the winner or the Mole. She said she was always right. Craig said she was wrong a lot. “Oh, whatever,” she said, laughing.

Nicole’s mom suggested she go before she caused anyone bodily harm. Nicole admitted that she might have threatened to do that. Mom was NOT happy about that. It was a hysterical discussion where Mom pointed out that she DID have the capability of doing something like that, being a doctor. Nicole agreed but said that they would have discovered the body. Her mother shushed her.

Paul…safe
Nicole…safe (she couldn’t go through with taking herself out.)
Clay…eliminated

Like Alex, Clay had a lot of people thinking he was the Mole. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all the Clay-ites to climb up on the CRAIG IS THE MOLE bandwagon. We always have room!

Really?
I thought there might have been more opportunity for Mole sabotage last night than EVER!
In the first mission:
Clay came up with the wrong answer.
Craig repeated a number incorrectly.
Paul led the team in the opposite way than they needed to go.
Nicole took a long time to come back with the number that they had wrong, and her new answer was ALSO wrong.
Beyond those witnessed issues, there could have been all sorts of chances to throw this challenge. Miscounting and taking up too much time could have been used several times in this challenge. I was really surprised that they got all the right numbers.
In the second mission:
Mark took a long time to give his answers, so time seemed to have run out before he finished.
Paul kept passing on a bunch of questions, limiting the number of questions that had answers.
Again, I think The Mole could have deliberately skipped or messed up questions, or taken more time to let time run out, or even purposely "forget" the responses so the other player didn't get to see their "loved one" and not get the $10,000 into the pot.
So, for me, I saw LOTS of opportunities for Mole sabotage.
I was a little surprised at the results of the show.
Clay is gone.
Nicole is still around.
Mark is The Mole.

Hey Darclyte, Yeah, I saw all those little things but to out and out sabotage and be able to hide it, I didn't see the opportunity for that. It would have been too obvious. Like I said, Craig caught my attention in the numbers challenge and Paul got it on the family challenge. Last night, I thought they all looked suspicious at one point or another. I can't wait until next week!

My daughter just got to see last week's episode and was surprised to see that her choice, Alex, was executed. Her second choice, and my first choice, is Clay. She'll be shocked to see that he was executed tonight.

I was amazed that Paul had such a pretty & sweet wife and such an adorable daughter. I really don't care for the tattooed loudmouth, so that really shocked me! I was also surprised that Nicole didn't have a husband (yes, I know, no ring) or a serious boyfriend because she is drop dead gorgeous.

I can't see Mark as the Mole because of his treadmill performance last week. He could easily have given up close to the end, but he went on like a trooper!
I think Nicole just has a math problem, as does Clay! Maybe you're right--maybe Craig is the Mole.

Hi Imzadi, See, IF Craig hadn't been the Mole, my next guess had been Alex and then when he left, Clay. This has just convinced me even more that CRAIG IS THE MOLE! :) Weren't Paul's wife and daughter gorgeous? And I think Nicole is a beauty too. (I also agree with her that the picture they use during execution is awful).

I guess I'm going to have to join the CRAIG IS THE MOLE bandwagon. Everybody I think is the mole keeps getting eliminated. At the last stop Nicole did come up with 338 first but Craig convinced her it was 228. Nicole is my second choice.
By the way, does the mole only get money if no one finds out who it is? Is it the pot? The way they were talking in the episode, it sounds like if you stump the group you get less than if you quess who the mole is.

Okay Vickie, you got me, I'm ready to surrender: Craig is the Mole. After last week I was leaning toward Clay with Craig in 2nd, but with Clay gone I'm totally behind you. I think there is a chance it could be Paul, but I'm almost certain it isn't Mark or Nicole. Of course, I have been wrong every other week, so don't take my word for it. ;)

Vickie, I now hear you about Craig being the Mole but I really really hope he is not just because I would LOVE IT for him to win. I don't think I'd want any of the three to win. They all played such an annoying game that I can't be happy with any of them winning.

Having said that, I don't get why these people just didn't answer the question in a simple manner. I mean they didn't need to be TRUE answers just answers that your person should remember easily. Fools.

People - I have said this from week one - PAUL IS THE MOLE!!

Nothing that happened last night convinced me otherwise. Didn't anyone notice that Paul got the smart team lost, was the last one running, complained about being tired, didn't have answers for many of his wife's questions - PAUL IS THE MOLE!!!

Great blog Vickie - one of us is going to be proven wrong soon!

VickieJean....amazing blog for real. I will just say this .....CRAIG IS THE MOLE. Just know it. Nicole is kind of a put on....the business about throwing the competition and leaving...AS IF!! But....when it comes down to it, Craig is the Mole God love his heart!!

I want to see if there actually was a pattern or if it was a guess.

Hi Vickie Jean. I AM SO CONFUSED! Last night I thought EACH OF THEM could be the Mole, because of the wrong answers, getting lost, way they were slow or couldn't think of answers to the questions, SO MANY THINGS, and I thought Clay and his math was the biggest suspicion but then he was RIGHT. So there I was thinking NICOLE until she said she'd vote herself off SO had to switch my votes and went for Paul because of his getting lost, not knowing answers (though WHY would he sabotauge not seeing his LOVELY FAMILY (maybe he's not the bas***d we think he is?) so there I was. Was surprised Clay was out - wasnt everyone's family lovely? EVEN Nicole's Mom AND Craig's girl? didn't they look perfectly suited? AND did you notice Mark's face when his wife asked if he was the Mole? Wasn't that guilt and shame in NOT answering?? I DON'T KNOW. When Nicole didn't get herself off (and said she found she couldn't do it) I went back to her but had already switched my answers to Paul and that's what I'm sticking with IF I can get ont he Mole site (having trouble voting and seeing the Mole's Journal).

SO I wish I was convinced like you Vickie Jean rather than just CONFUSED. Now I'm STILL saying it COULD be Nicole, COULD be Paul, COULD be Mark, COULD be Craig. Wonder who'll get outsted next week AND does anybody know what kind of payoff The Mole gets if he/she IS or ISN'T chosen by somebody???

Looking forward to BB tonight AND haven't gotten to photobucket yet. Was going to try but afraid if I do it while I'm writing this I'll lose my post so another time!!

The first 4 numbers were 13,21,89,144 and the number Clay said was next was 333. Don't know any of the ones after that.

In case anyone's interested, just got off The Mole site and of all of the people that entered the quiz (where you answer the same questions the contestants did) MOST of the voters thought CRAIG was the Mole, coming in a close second was Nicole, and tied for 3rd were Paul and Mark with Clay in last place, but like me many may have voted AFTER Clay was voted off. Assume some of the others voted BEFORE since why else would they have chosen him??

As far as the journal was concerned the last entry was a goodbye to Alex with a comment on the side about the bottle of wine as far as year and flavor so guess our Mole IS a wine connoisseur (ha looked it up in spellcheck before I used it!!) comment after last night's was to be continued. You might want to check out the site.

I found the other numbers at tvgrapevine's site.

All the numbers are from the Fibonacci sequence (add the two previous numbers together to get the next one).

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, 4181, ...

skip 6, take 2, skip 2, take 3, skip 1, take 1, skip 2, take 2

I don't see a pattern in the choice of numbers though... I don't know if it's a clue.
