I don't know if I'd say they're good per se, but they're supporting a great cause! I have a friend running/walking in the Komen race next month so I support anyone who supports breast cancer research! (And now I can say this without feeling guilty that monies raised won't just end up paying my salary and 401(k)....)

I did the cancer walk a few years ago. I really enjoyed it and you'd be amazed at who you run into. I ran into my old high school sweetheart's mom, dad and sister. His mom had breast cancer and survived it. It was really nice to see them and I was SO glad she was doing good.

It's shocking how many women have breast cancer. And how many of them you know personally.

I think the growing cancer rate has something to do with how processed everything we eat and drink is now a days.

True. I don't think the M&Ms want to labeled good anyway. Thanks for telling us about this, Mannie. The number of people touched by cancer is overwhelming and terrifying. I'll bet there isn't a single person left out there who doesn't at least know someone who has or had cancer.

My mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1986. She had a complete mastectomy on one side. Her and I spent hours trying to get a prosthetic to look and feel natural. She decided to have an implant in both sides, to make them look the same. While removing tissue in her remaining breast they found ANOTHER primary cancer. She started on Chemo after her second mastectomy.
I remember the morning she called and told me her hair was falling out in clumps. I took off work and got to her house. But the only way to help her was first to cut it all off and then shave it. I told her she could shave mine too! She wouldn't.
She was clear of cancer for ten years after that bout. Then she started having back problems. After many visits to Mayo, they found the cancer growing in her spine. She lived with it for five years, then one day it all changed and I knew she was dying from it. I asked her to keep a cancer journal and she did. I read it once in awhile to remind me of her and of what is important in life.
My mom died on September 19, 2001. Thanks for this post, Mannie. It makes you an angel in my eyes.

Mannie - Thanks for posting this. Thank goodness there's no cancer in my family, but I lost my beloved brother-in-law to it, and good friends have been touched by it. I have sent this on.
Cindy - Thank you for sharing your story. I feel especially blessed to have my mom still with us at 87, and in excellent health.

Wow Cindy. That's a very moving story. I'm sorry to hear it but I'm glad she made you the journal. At least you have that part of her to visit when you feel the need.

My mom died on September 19, 2001. Thanks for this post, Mannie. It makes you an angel in my eyes.
That's so odd, Cindy, one of my favorite aunts died from metastases to the liver from breast cancer on September 18, 2004 (I think it was 2004). I always remember the date because it's my mom's birthday and it was my mom's sister who died. She was first diagnosed when I was in 4th grade and she got a full mastectomy (back then they didn't do lumpectomies and such) and she went into remission for 20 years before the cancer came back. It was hard to watch her at the end--she'd tried 22 of the 25 different chemo treatments for breast cancer and it kept spreading. But the end was very quick and she quite literally stopped breathing in my arms. I feel very fortunate that I was able to fly out to Los Angeles and be there when she passed. It always seems like it's really quick with cancer at the very end, when it spreads to the liver.
We have a lot of cancer in my family, and I have many friends living with cancer, and not just breast cancer. I might have mentioned this before but my cousin (my aunt's daughter) was diagnosed with some sort of cancer last Christmas and they're still not sure what type of cancer she has--all they know is that it's spreading all over her head (it started in her eye). Watching her suffer (she had to quit her job) almost makes me wish she had something simple and easily treatable as breast cancer. Not to malign or underappreciate how difficult it is to live with breast cancer, but when compared with the other types of cancers, breast and prostate cancers are so prevalent and so well-funded that there are many treatments available and no matter how poor the healthcare available to you, you still have a high cure rate. That's not always the case with some of these rarer cancers, which are poorly funded and severely underresearched but in my opinion need it more. Plus, in my personal experience, it's much, much harder to watch people I love suffer from multiple myeloma and eye cancer than it has been to watch people I love suffer from breast cancer--there's a ridiculous amount of pain involved but the pain is different. Well, that's just how it felt for me. It sucks to watch no matter what.
Sorry. After four years of working here, I have many, many opinions about cancer and cancer research!!

Mannie, they even sell those M&M's here and if I'm buying M&M's I'll buy those when I can find them.
Cindy thanks for sharing. I'm sure that had to be very difficult to live through. You were a great daughter and I'm sure your mom appreciated everything you did for her.

Oh Mannie can read minds at 11:am this morning my best friend at work the one last week who came and picked me up from the hospital informed me she is going in tomorrow for a mastecomy she found out Just Tuesday she has Breast Cancer. I am still in shock she is one of the nicest people I have ever known. We have been friends since I moved to Florida we have worked together now at 2 different companies for almost 10 years. I meet her at my first job we were together for 2 years then I left and 2 weeks left she left and came to my new company. We have lunch together almost everyday. She was the one who called my family last week when I was taken to the hospital. She has her family with her which will make things easier but I told her anything I can do she better ask. I am praying for her and would appreciate all my blog buddies to say a little pray for Miss Sue. Thanks Many people I work with are also walking this weekend.

Of course I will, Joey. My cousin (another one) just told me the other day she found a lump so I get to go through this all over again. :-P Wish Sue luck on her mastectomy. I'm guessing she's going to have chemo to follow that and maybe RT too, so she's going to need all the strength she can get!

Joey I'm adding Miss Sue to my prayers.
My hubby's aunt had breast cancer as well. She went through the removal and chemo & radiation. She's been doing great since, so we're keeping our fingers crossed.
