Katherine Heigl pulls out of Emmy race

Last night, the ballots for the 2008 Emmy Awards were released online for voters. But there was just one thing missing: Last year's Drama Supporting Actress winner Katherine Heigl was nowhere to be found!!! And it wasn't a mistake.

In a statement given to Tom O'Neil over at The Envelope, Heigl states:

"I am truly grateful for the honor that the Academy bestowed upon me last year. I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the Academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."

I think she's doing the right thing. She didn't do much this season, and an Emmy nomination this year would have been undeserving. But I can't help but wonder if this statement is a slap in the face to all the writers who work on Grey's. What do you think?

Hey Joe.

I don't watch Grey's so I can't really judge on the writing, but that definitely sounds like a slam to me!

Joe, this news made my day. I agree Heigel has not had much to do on Grey's; Chandra Wilson is grossly overlooked. Should Izzie get a better story next season (which it looks like she just may) I'll back her up 100%.

Have a good day!

I didn't watch Grey's this season either, but it's a definite message to the writers. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to call them out like that when you'll still be working with them, but maybe that's just me. "Izzy" might just decide to go be a Doctors Without Borders in Outer Mongolia next season.

Hmm. I agree with her that Izzie didn't have and Emmy worthy storyline this season, and that she shouldn't get a nomination just because she won last year, but coming out in the press and saying it like that is kind of a slap to the writers.

Heigl just seems to be saying what most of the fans were thinking anyway: "Gizzie sucked!"

In my opinion, that was not neccessarily a slam. Is it the writers that choose nominations? Surely not. I feel that if there was an intended slam, it was directed more to whooever those people are.

I think that because Ms. Heigl is a hot commodity lately and some body was trying to cash in on that gravy train, Heigl backed out gracefully leaving the way for another actor whose role was more plum. I personally don't think there was a slam. Just an honest and aware moving out of the way.

I think it is less of a slam on the writers and more of a commentary on the strike in general and how it affected the show; she was visible in her support for the writers during the strike and if TPTB had been quicker and more forthcoming with their concessions the show might not have had the hiccups it did this year. I think it is much more of a slam on the actors who put themselves forward each year without any regard to the quality of work they produced, feeding their bloated egos!
