Bones: That's a Lot of Heart, Bones.
Over a year after Brennan's father, Max Keenan (Ryan O' Neal), was accused of murdering the crooked deputy director of the FBI we finally got to see his trial and it was definitely worth the wait. The Squint team and Booth were forced to testify for the prosecution, which didn't set well with them, but given Brennan's ability to compartmentalize she seemed completely fine with it. That and the fact that she and Zach are both "crazy competitive." Everyone involved with the case, including Max's own children, knows that he's guilty, but they also all know that he did the world a favor by taking down a bad man to protect his children.
With all of these conflicted emotions and thoughts this was a great episode that truly showed the dynamics of the team and how deeply their friendship really goes. Deepest of all was Angela's devotion to Brennan; she refused to testify even though Brennan told her to, and was sent to jail for contempt of court. "Sweetie, this is one of those times when I know I’m right and everyone else is confused." Their jail cell talk showed the beauty of their friendship when Angela admitted that she thought Max would be convicted and she couldn't be a part of that. "Friends don’t send friends’ fathers to the electric chair."
For the first time ever I was put in the position of hoping that my beloved Squints would make a mistake and it felt very odd. Brennan found herself in the same position for the first time, when it turned out that Zach did make a mistake, and return character Clark Edison (I actually like his character, but, of course, not as much as I love Zach. Maybe he is Gormagon?), the forensic anthropologist for the defense caught it, casting doubt on Max's guilt. For a few brief moments while the new murder weapon was being found there seemed to be hope that Max would go free and Brennan realized that she really wanted him to go free even though she knew it was guilty. Her love for him overruled her scientific reason.
She also discovered that her father was willing to sacrifice his life just so that he didn't have to leave her again, and in a shocking display, decided to do the same for him by allowing herself to be painted as a possible suspect in order to give reasonable doubt to her father's guilt. Did you see how Booth could never bring himself to suggest that she could have done it, even after seeing a disturbing version of the murder with her as the killer in his mind? After catching on to what she was doing ("That's a lot of heart, Bones.") he finally did what she wanted and said that she could have had time to commit the crime, but it hurt him greatly to say it because he could never hurt her.
The scene at the end with the entire cast together hugging, and Brennan holding her father while silently thanking Booth with her eyes was wonderful and it reminded me why I love this group and this show so much. I'm also glad that Caroline isn't going to prosecute Brennan; I don't think I could go through another trial like this and neither could the Squints!
Between this episode and the new episode of House last night (So much Cuddy! *dies of excitement/love of Lisa Edelstein*) I had quite an excellent birthday even if I did spend all day proctoring exams. Thank you Fox writers.
Highlights: --Booth making Brennan laugh about separating her head and her heart as they waited for Zach to search for the murder weapon. Brennan to Booth: "Sometimes I think you are really very nice." Aww! --The opening scene where Brennan laughs hysterically at Booth's theory that a contorted skeleton was wrapped in a carpet. Caroline deadpans, "I did not know she could laugh." I didn't know she could laugh like that either! I wonder what did happen to that body. --Booth and Brennan teasing Sweets about "liking" them when he says he wants to continue to "study" them. He really just wants to spend time with them, but they give in eventually in exchange for help with cases. --Sweets being a genius with a ton of degrees, but still using words like "totally" and "mega-dangerous." --Caroline prepping the team for trial and telling them what is wrong with them: Booth has to lose his "Cocky" belt buckle, Zach is not allowed to cut his own air, Cam has to eat so her stomach isn't growling and Angela needs to, "Ugly up a little. The plain women on the jury will hate you." --Brennan and Booth getting separated by the judge in court for whispering across the aisle. Also, later when she went to Booth to discuss her plan to cast reasonable doubt on her dad's guilt, even though they weren't supposed to be talking to each other about the case. "Please, you are the person I talk to about stuff like this." And everything else, Brennan.

Hi Megan! Happy Birthday!!
Thanks for another great Bones blog. Man, last night's ep was awesome. I think it ranks as one of my faves of the series (not just season), right up there with the "trapped in the car" ep... that's how good last night's ep was.
"Sweetie, this is one of those times when I know I’m right and everyone else is confused."
Before this episode, I didn't think it was possible to love Angela any more than I already did, but after she dropped this line and went to jail to back it up, my admiration for her went off the charts.
For the first time ever I was put in the position of hoping that my beloved Squints would make a mistake and it felt very odd.
I know exactly what you mean. I was actually rooting for Edison and not the squints. Talk about conflicted emotions. Not to mention the mixed emotions I was having wanting Max to get cleared, even though we all knew that he was guilty. (It helped that I could remind myself that Max did what he did to protect Russ; even though gutting him and setting him on fire may have been a little over-the-top.)
Booth and Bones have had a ton of great moments together on this show, but Booth going along with Bones's plan to cast doubt for the jury was such a freakin' awesome gesture, that my admiration for his character also skyrocketed last night. Seriously, the next episode could show Angela and Booth kicking puppies and making children cry, and I wouldn't care, that's how much I love both of them right now for their actions in this ep.
Not that the ep was all drama, there were some hysterical moments too, like: Sweets using the phrase "like, totally" to answer questions in court; the judge making Booth and Bones switch seats with Cam and Russ; Caroline's one-liners ("it's just rude to accuse me of murder); and many more.
I should stop now before I put everyone to sleep by going on and on and on. Honestly though, I usually don't hijack blogs like this unless it's for Friday Night Lights or Supernatural, so that just tells you how much I really loved this ep of Bones.

MEGS!
Great blog.
How wonderful was this episode!?!? I thought I couldn't love Brennan, Booth or Angela any more because of last week's episode with the baby. Now I absolutely adore them! I can't even think of the superlatives to use to explain my glee over last night's episode. I know everyone on the bus this morning was wondering why I had a big old grin on my face. I couldn't stop thinking of it.
I loved when Brennan's father said about the defense attorney something like, "of all the crooked lawyers in this town, you choose the only one with scruples?" and when Brennan bragged on how great "her team" was, Russ asked if she could "brag" on her team another time.
I loved Caroline calling everyone Cherie and her ex-husband/defense attorney realizing she "caught the scent." Also when Caroline chastised B/B and Squints when they were waving at each other in the hallway.
I loved that Zach had no problem testifying, Jack had to ask Brennan's permission and then okay testifying, and our sweet sweet Angela pleading the first amendment and refusing to testify. I could have kissed that girl!
I loved that although the dynamics were topsy turvy and Brennan had to work against her group, she did it in a way that didn't compromise their integrity or reputations and was actually proud of their work. And although you could see the forgiveness on her face when Zach "was mistaken" I wonder what the fallout will be from that.
I loved that Sweets was trying to think up ways to keep B/B in therapy and they sing-songed "I think he likes us" like Sandra Bullock did in Ms. Congeniality.
I loved that Brennan couldn't stay to hear the verdict and Booth left to give her a hug then stands back for Angela to touch her.
Most of all I loved that scene at the end where Max comes running out and does that little stance with his fists before he grabs ahold of Brennan and she looks over at Booth.
Definitely one of the best episodes ever.

Hi Megan,
Well, you, Rod and Kath have said it all for me. All I can do is second all of your comments.
I'll just add that I loved having an entire episode of Caroline. Also, I'm very happy that they, like, figured out a way for, like, Sweets to, like, stick around. Awesome!
Happy Birthday and congrats on the Red Star--well deserved.

Great recap and Happy Birthday!!
I loved the part where they were talking to Sweets after the trial, "he likes us." It reminded me of Miss Congeniality where she sings to Bratt "you want to kiss me, you want to marry me" and that made me laugh even harder!
I love how they are developing the characters in this show, it's like in Numbers, I just want to invite them over and hang out or give them all a hug! lol

What a freaking awesome episode. You guys have pretty much covered it all with your comments. There were just so many fantastic moments to love.
Every team member's reaction to testifying was so perfect. And Angela's absolute refusal to testify was fabulous. I loved the scene in the jail where Brennan asks what she did to deserve a friend like Angela.
And the Booth/Bones dynamic could not have been more perfect. I loved how they had to be separated in court because they "don't whisper as quietly as they think they do." The look in his eyes was amazing when he was testifying and realized Brennan's plan to cast doubt on her father. His statement "That's a lot of heart Bones" is one of my favorite moments of the episode. And that hug at the end...
There's more I'd like to ramble about, but I have a final tonight and I really need to get back to studying. Esp since I watched Bones (and other things!) last night instead of studying like I should have.
So I'll just say this. I absolutely loved it.

When Booth went to be with Bones during the verdict and he just opened his arms and she grabbed him - there was no hesitation on either part, they just knew it was right. Of course, we all know that so let's just keep moving them down that road. Great recap of a superb episode (in my top 3).

Did anyone else see this blurb in Matt Roush's Dispatch:
Still, my fave moment of laughter of the entire night came from an unexpected source: the pre-credits opening of an excellent and heartfelt episode of Bones, when Bones laughs uncontrollably at Booth's theory that the bizarrely contorted skeleton they're viewing could have ended up in its current state by being rolled up in a carpet. She literally is guffawing in this scene (well played, Emily Deschanel), prompting grumpy prosecutor Caroline to declare, "I did not know she could laugh." I'd like to see more of that, myself.

Very good and enjoyable episode. The father still claims that he didn't kill the FBI guy, so if he really didn't do it, then who did?

Thank you very, very much for the kind comments about my blog and the birthday wishes! I love you all! Wow, I'm sorry it has taken so long for me to get back here. I had a long, long day of proctoring exams and I have been away from my computer all day (not an easy thing for me as my blog buddies can understand). I have to get up in few hours for the last day of exams (YAY!!) so please forgive me for not responding to each of you individually just this once. Just know that I read all your comments and loved all of your favorite moments and insights. I'm glad you seemed to love this episode as much as I did. It made my day so much better to come home and read all your thoughts.
I loved that Sweets was trying to think up ways to keep B/B in therapy and they sing-songed "I think he likes us" like Sandra Bullock did in Ms. Congeniality.
That was exactly what I thought, too, Kath and Indy! I'm glad I'm not the only one who recognized that chant from Miss Congeniality!
And I mention it everytime she's in an episode, but I forgot to say it this week so here goes: I love Caroline Julian!
Good to see you, Pix! I hope the tests went well!
That was a beautiful unspoken moment, bcfan.
I did see that, Marci; I'm always glad that Matt seems to enjoy this show almost as much as we do.

I'm sorry, Megan, but I really didn't like this episode. It probably ranks as the worst FOR ME in 3 seasons. I'm just going to say that I hated that the Team was broken up, with an "us against them" mentality. I'm sure not going to get all ugly though, like the other site. I had my reasons all typed out, when I couldn't get it to post, but it just isn't worth it to rehash it. I'm glad Bones finally got this behind her and can move on!
There were some funny things I liked though (I'm all for the humor!). I liked Carolyn reading everyone the riot act before the trial. I liked Max - "Why can't we use that guy you work with. You know, big eyes, toaster head (Zack!)". B&B pushing all of Sweets buttons at once outside the courthouse.
I'll tell ya, when Booth was on the stand, thinking about Bones murdering someone, the look on his face - OMG I wanted to cry! David is an excellent actor!
I'm really suspicious Of Clark. I'm thinking even if he isn't the big G, he has a lot of anger towards Zack. The way he said "Sport" was pretty telling. What has he been doing with his time since Zack came back and booted him out of a job? Maybe someone SHOULD check him for dentures!
REALLY looking forward to next week!
