Bones: I'm Deceived.
Let's begin at the end, shall we? Okay, I'll admit to being a spoiler junkie so I've known for awhile that something bad was going to happen at the end of this episode (i.e. someone was going to get hurt) and as soon as I realized Pam was becoming obsessed with Booth I thought that she would try to hurt Brennan. And as soon as I saw Booth stand up to face Pam I knew that he was going to step in front of the shot. But I never saw it coming that Brennan would pick up Booth's gun and shoot (and probably kill) Pam, or that Booth would black out at the end with Brennan holding him and screaming his name. I think we can all figure out that Booth will make it (there is no Bones without Booth), but this sets up lots of interesting possible circumstances for the finale.
This episode involved a lot of psychology so Sweets got to take a leading role and I was quite happy about it. He recognized immediately that Pam was dangerous (and had VERY complicated body issues) and that she was going to attach herself to Booth, even though Booth and Brennan both mocked him for his predictions. ("Mocking will not change my opinion. I’ve been mocked many, many times before. That came out wrong.") He also helped Brennan and Booth understand their superiority issues and even got in a psychological argument with Brennan (Booth pulling up a chair between them: "Kids, you keep fighting, no dessert.") It was also cute how he is still so excited about their therapy appointments.
If separating your trail mix is a sign of craziness then I am definitely in trouble, but Pam had way bigger issues going on. We don't see Booth genuinely scared very often, but when Pam confronted him in his office, brought him socks, and responded to his "Ma'am, this is way inappropriate" by giggling and saying she was going to tell her mother our FBI guy was genuinely freaked out. He even took a step back from her. I don't know if he was afraid of losing his pride by admitting that Sweets was right and he was wrong, but I really wish he would have told someone about how crazy she was before it was too late.
Between this episode and the absolutely, mind-bendingly amazing episode of House that I watched afterward I had quite a night of TV...and a ton to try to process between now and the finales next week. Is it Monday yet?
Other highlights: --Brennan singing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and putting on quite the spectacular and adorable show as Booth as her friends cheered her on creating "an appropriate atmosphere of frivolity", and Booth even brandished his lighter. This was such a cute, fun scene...until everyone got shot, of course. --Zach bursting into song after being heckled by Hodgins and attracting the attention and admiration of everyone in the lab. I loved Angela's two thumbs up and Hodgins begrudgingly respectful, "Thanks for the free concert." --Booth's joy at having a reason to say "Cut the cheese." --Not that it is an excuse to kill anyone, but that alarm clock going off every two minutes got on my nerves, too. --Zach was full of surprises is this one. I enjoyed him detailing his work-out routine and admitting to being deceptively strong. Hodgins: "I'm deceived." --Brennan describing Booth's grass allergies: "Particles from the cut grass are causing his mast cells to release inflammatory mediators." --Brennan: "Until I was 13, I wanted to be the next Cyndi Lauper." Booth: "I’d say you were kidding, but I don’t think you know to kid." Brennan: "The other girls and I referred to her as 'rad.'" --Another gross opening scene; the head in the tractor with the eyeball dropping out at an appropriate moment in the conversation. Eww! --Pam calling Brennan scrawny and scarecrow, Brennan: "I’m not scrawny! My body mass index is well within normal limits." --Booth ogling the girl working out at the gym. --The American Idol references to match the American Idol guest stars: Booth calls Brennan "Paula" after she keeps saying how good all the karaoke singers are and Booth referring to Kelly Clarkson, American Idol and "Because of You." Brennan: "Because of me?" --Brennan: "I like it when you break down doors. I don’t know why exactly, I just do."
Note: I am leaving town early Wednesday morning and I will be in Houston until Sunday. I'm taking my laptop with me so I plan and hope to still be blogging, but if I go missing for a few days you'll understand why.

Hi Megan,
I was not at all prepared for what happened last night, since I always avoid promos and spoilers. Of course, we know Booth isn't going to die, but it doesn't lessen the shock. I believed Sweets when he warned him that Pam was dangerous and I kept waiting for something to happen. Waiting until the last minute was clever on the part of the writers, because I had almost forgotten about her until it happened.
Well, it was fun until Booth got shot. Zach should have gotten up on the stage too; he really does have a good voice. The banter between him and Hodgins was great throughout the episode, especially Hodgins' "I'm deceived" response to Zach's "I'm deceptively strong." And I loved Cam and Angela's response to Zach's singing.
I watch Medium at 10:00 and was grateful for a happy and hopeful season finale on that show, after being traumatized at the end of Bones.
Thanks for another great recap, Megan. I hope you have fun in Houston and that you'll be able to keep blogging while you're there.

Hi Megan! Another great episode of Bones last night, and another great blog from you so we can dish about it.
Like you, I knew that something bad was going to happen in this episode, but I was not expecting what went down in the karaoke bar. I predicted that Crazy Pam was going to come into the bar shooting like a psycho scorned, but I assumed that her shots would strike either Sweets or Zak -- not Booth! Given how much screen time both Sweets and Zak got last night and that we saw new sides of their characters for the first time, I assumed that the show was setting at least one of them up for disaster. I honestly didn't expect Booth get hit.
I'm not sure which moment was more awesome: Booth stepping in front of the bullet for Bones, or Bones methodically and quickly shooting Crazy Pam in the throat, putting her down instantly. (That was freakin' incredible.)
I do have to confess that I have one minor gripe about this episode. It didn't sit well with me that once Booth was shot, our Squint Squad did next to nothing while Bones rushed to his side, shot Crazy Pam, then tried to stop the bleeding. I understand from a dramatic standpoint why the show wanted Bones to be alone with Booth in that moment, but the Squints that I know and love would not have stood around doing nothing. Granted, Hodgins told Zak to call the police and then grabbed Crazy Pam's gun; but Sweets, Angela, and Cam all just stood there staring in shock... doing nothing. Seriously?? I think Cam and Angie would have been on the floor trying to help Booth or Bones. Sweets too.
One last thing: House was awesome last night. I'm a newcomer to the show (only seen like the last 4-5 eps), but the ending of last night's ep was great. I think House is getting a spot on my Keeper List next season.
Ugh, I'm blogjacking again. Sorry!!

Megs!
I SO wanted to call you last night and scream about Booth being shot! It was SO hard to wait until your blog this morning! Holy Mackerel, Megan! To say I was shocked is to minimize how I felt. My husband brought over the tissue box to tease me about crying. But I didn't cry! - I screamed! I hollered! I beat the arm of the chair!
Since I was too wired to sleep, you know what I did? I watched it again. It's amazing the stuff you miss the first time around.
I love how Booth doesn't mind putting his hands on people, but heaven forbid someone should touch him. Booth had his hands all over Sweets shoulders and back as he was ushering him out of his office, but when Sweets put his hand on Booth's shoulder - Booth shrugged it off and made a face.
I loved how Brennan put that french fry in her mouth with that chagrinned look when she knew she pushed Booth too far with the whole "Society considers me to be a superior person because I am the best anthropologist and highly intelligent and a best selling author..."
There's so much more I want to say, but I have to go and anyway - I couldn't fit it all here. Needless to say, it was not what I expected. IMHO, this is really the best show on television!

Marci--Thank you! I realized Pam was bad news as soon as Sweets did, too. I thought Zach was adorable in this episode; I think he needs to sing more often.
Rod--Thanks! You are never a blogjacker! I love all your comments. I think the end scene was sort of halfway being done in slow motion so maybe that is why Angela and Cam weren't responding very quickly. Of course, if two people, including my friend just got shot, I might be frozen in shock for a few seconds, too, unless I could be doing something to help. I literally gasped when Brennan shot Pam like that. I thought Booth might take a bullet for her, but I never saw the second part coming.
I'm so glad you watched House last night. It absolutely blew me away. Maybe you will get hooked into it like I did. I can't believe Monday is so far away!

Rod - It didn't sit well with me that once Booth was shot, our Squint Squad did next to nothing...
You know, I wondered about that too. I understand they were in shock, but still, these are highly trained professionals. Isn't Cam a doctor? She should have been able to do something to administer emergency aid until help arrived.

Hi Kath! I could hardly sleep last night, too, as a combination of Bones and House related excitement! I woke up early just to blog about Bones (and I hate getting up early!). I loved Brennan cutting herself off with the french fry in her mouth, too, and all the stuff with Booth and Sweets.

Hi Meggy, so glad you blogged about Bones. I actually got home in time to simultaneously watch Bones and HIMYM, so I got most of it and won't have to rewatch it at lunch. I did, unfortunately, miss Zach's musical debut.
Spoiler whore though I am, I didn't hear anything about the ending of this episode (or maybe I didn't process it). So, it was a complete surprise to me. I agree with Rod that Bones shooting Crazy Fat Pam in the neck with a single shot was freakin' incredible. As Sweets put it last week: "indubitably." (That word just always makes me think of Schoolhouse Rock.)
I totally loved Booth/David (there was a lot of David in Booth this ep, I thought) getting down with Bones's rendition of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, which I thought was really very good. Well, it was all good until someone got shot anyway.
I also loved Bones's description of Booth's grass pollen allergies. I know a few things about mast cells so I got it right away but that just cracked me up.
Just hearing the alarm clock go off twice was enough to raise my hackles so I can sort of understand the crazy neighbor's rage. Although, wouldn't it have been better to break in and destroy the alarm clock instead, idiot?!
Oh and my favorite moment was when Sweets saw Booth put an assuring hand on Crazy Fat Pam's shoulder and burst out, "No, don't touch her!" That pretty much set the whole episode up for me. It's not my favorite because it was particularly amusing or awesome, it was just very nicely written and I can appreciate that most of all!
That and the fact that since the writers' strike there have been fewer inaccurate DC details for the ENFJ in me to go crazy over and that makes me very, very happy. (Yes, Kath, I know you know why!)

PS--it didn't bother me all that much that the Squints were all frozen in shock. I guess it happened all so fast (and I wasn't expecting it so I was in shock too) that it worked for me. Bones's reaction was a purely emotional one--those happen quickly. I guess it seemed a little weird that Hodgins had the presence of mind to tell Zach to call 911, and that would indicate that he could have done more. But I'd like to think that we cut out of the scene just before everyone rushed in to help stop the flow of blood. Maybe they were all hoping that Booth was magically wearing a bullet-proof vest that day, because that's what I was hoping!

Famin - Is there a "Music Center" in DC? I wondered if the writers' had the Music Center in Los Angeles on the brain when they wrote that line of dialogue, or if there is actually a venue in DC called the Music Center.

I don't think there's a Music Center in DC but I've been wrong before! There's the Duke Ellington School of Performing Arts that whatsisname went to. The comedian. I'm totally blanking on his name and face right now but he was on Inside the Actor's Studio recently. Not Chris Rock. Urgh! Damn you failing memory! So, there might be great places in town for open mike, although the ones I've heard of are for poetry slams (we have some really great people at those) and comedy.
Maybe there's something in the City Paper? It's the DC equivalent to LA Weekly.

Thanks, Famin. I did find this:
Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, Bethesda
It's no big deal, I was just curious. I see and hear so much of Los Angeles in shows that are set elsewhere, it's disconcerting sometimes. The writers don't always seem to do their homework about the places where their shows are set.

Well, one of my biggest pet peeves about Bones is that they get so close to getting the details right but then they'll say or do something that completely ruins it for me. (Like with the skywalks at the Jeffersonian. Haven't these people even seen pictures of the Smithsonian?? All they had to do was substitute "skywalk" for "tunnels" and they'd be all set because most of the buildings at SI are connected by underground tunnels that are only open to staff.)
I'm not sure what the Music Center at the Strathmore is exactly. The Strathmore (you'd think that since I parked there this morning I'd know more about it!) is actually a concert hall, albeit a small one. I can't imagine they'd have a coffeeshop like venue for open mic though. That's what the Music Center in Los Angeles is, right? The Strathmore does more symphony orchestra types of events I think. I would say it's similar to the Kennedy Center except they do fewer plays and more art exhibits. They also teach classes and do summer camp stuff which the Kennedy Center doesn't do (to my knowledge).
Okay, I just Googled the Music Center of Los Angeles and it does seem like it's similar to the Strathmore. My bad. You'd think that since they own the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion I would know more about it but no!

The open mic night wasn't held at what Brennan referred to as the Music Center. She just referenced in passing. Open mic night was held at a kareoke bar.
Sorry, everyone. I know this discussion is way off subject. Sometimes I let myself get too bogged down in details.

Wonderful recap of an awesome episode!!! I had no clue that anyone was going to get hurt last night, so Booth getting shot blew me away. And the way Bones shot Pam was kind of scary.

I agree - House was great last night! The end was a total shocker to me. I'm glad to hear that you are thinking of putting it on your Keeper list.
