How Long Will Dexter Last?
We've never been a fan of HBO, Showtime or any of the cable networks (barring Sopranos), while cognizant of their place and time. However, when CBS, in their gasping attempt to improve ratings, decides to air "Dexter", we have to see what all the talk is about.
After viewing our first episode last night, our only question is "How Long Will It Last?" The concept alone gives rise to an assault by conservatives demanding that it be removed from the schedule.
Visually, we found it difficult to watch, though we acknowledge we couldn't watch all of "The Godfather" and only recently have been able to watch a full hour of any of the CSI's. Yes, we are a wimp.
With Dexter, it goes far beyond the graphics of the forensics to make one squeamish. The underlying issues are bound to cause an uproar. The same might be said of "The Sopranos", which more than compensated with the slickness of the production, the superb acting and it's place on cable.
We feel compelled to ask a nagging question here. How is a show such as Dexter allowed to pass censure, yet Charlotte Ross' bare bottom in NYPD Blue garnered ABC a 1.4 mil fine? It defies rationale.
As a parent, we have allowed a fairly free tv reign to the teenager, while monitoring the youngens. We questioned this long held decision with the airing of Dexter. Are we in the minority with this judgment? Do others share our concerns?

Are you the Queen? What's with the royal "we"?
It's lasted 2 fabulous seasons on Showtime and it's going on at least one more, if that answers your question.

If you find any part of CSI objectionable than I think that it is safe to say that Dexter will never find a comfortable place in your home.
As for how long Dexter will last airing on CBS - not long I hope. The cleansed version of Dexter that is now airing is really a poor representation of the real show proudly shown on Showtime. The fact that CBS chose to air a cleansed version is totally a result of the WGA strike and the lack of original programming available. Dexter's viewing should be left on Showtime or by DVD - it is a wonderful show!

I agree Ranger. Only I have not seen season 1 so I don't know what they cut. I loved season 2 and you can see the charcters are so much more developed and interesting. I feel you are correct when you tell dojo that if CSI is offensive they will never like Dexter. Too bad. It is one of the best shows on these days.

In all fairness to Dojo, sometimes, people do write in the third person. I have seen other bloggers here do so. I didn't realize that it is considered a faux pas. As far as liking or not liking Dexter, I tried it on Showtime when it premiered. I couldn't get into it--but then that's the beauty of not having to like everything out there. It has many fans, but, it didn't inspire me to watch past episode 1.

Exactly, Ranger! You said it perfectly! Dexter was never designed for anything other then cable and that is where it rightfully belongs. This was merely a stop gap measure for CBS as they work through the rest of this season. But if Dexter was able to pick up a few more new viewers, that that is great as well.
All people have the power to decide if they will watch a show or not...that is the beauty of having the ability to change the channel.
Though I am a bit confused by the CSI comment. Dojo -- don't you blog about CSI: Miami on a regular basis?

Those who can afford the subscription to Showtime, DVDs, or Netflix don't have to bother with CBS's watered down version. For me, however, it worked just fine and I'm happy to have a chance to see it.

I agree Dexter is a fascinating show, but find it lacking for primetime viewing. It should be limited to cable channels. It seems more and more often the medias are merging, leaving fewer choices for the discriminating tv fan. As Dojo says, it's not the violence, that's nothing new; it's the basic concept of the show that's disturbing to many.
