Who's Still Killing? And Whose Days Are Numbered?

Show opened at the Wilshire Theater, which looked great. Bill Bellamy looked great in his suit, but then gave us Clinton jokes. I can’t wait to see Bill and give him hell for that. C’mon, man, Clinton jokes? With Bush in the White House? There’s no easier target than Bush. We comics are really going to have to work once he’s gone.

The show is down to the final five and I can’t think of any way to blog other than to review, so here goes.

Lavelle is confident as hell. He talks like a winner, which I never did, but hey, I can’t argue with success and he’s been killing so far. But this set felt a little flat to me. He seemed to be thinking rather than just being funny. I thought the jokes about slavery and the working friend Juan were kind of weak. But I liked the joke about getting paid overtime when the office psycho holds you hostage, and the closer about looking like a talking traffic barrel was good. So I think he’ll stay.

John Reep opened great with cell-phone jokes. I think we are all annoyed by those cell-phone talkers and laugh at the Bluetooth-headset people. I always wonder what they are going to do if aliens come down and ask who they are talking to. He then went into a long beer bit that felt kind of flat. Good luck, John; if you survive with that set I hope you step it up next time. I think you're on thin ice.

Ralph was next. He had the weirdest intro I ever heard: "Here’s a brother who really loves his mama." Huh? Ralph came out with a touching thank you to the audience, but I didn’t get that. I mean, it took him a whole minute just to get to his jokes. You only get five minutes, so save the thanks for the interviews. Once he did get started, he rolled as usual. Ralph does love the family jokes. He committed a lot of time to acting out his uncle. It seemed a little long, but it worked. I think Ralph will survive. He also looked the best — great suit. He looks professional and like a star. Hey, I hope my commenting on clothes doesn’t make me gay. I’d hate to step on ANT’s toes. I just like comics who respect the TV stage and dress for it.

OK, Amy, you can't come out saying it's twice as hard for women comics and then do an eating-disorder bit followed by a boyfriend bit. That’s the stereotypical stuff that gives women comics a bad rep. Amy is the least experienced and I think it showed. The side comment to ANT didn’t work as he wasn’t there. I also think she repeated a bit from her New York tryout. I like you, Amy, but I think this may have been it for you.

Gerry Dee rocked it. He came out and started right in with jokes, no time wasted, no stammering. It was a great set. Yes, the material was simple stuff — dinner plates and gravy boats — but it was hilarious. I think he saved this show. Gerry’s been trying for years to get here and I’d say he plans to stay. Great job, Gerry.

Side note: It was great to see John Heffron in the crowd, the man who beat me in Season 2. OK, Season 5, step up: Season 2 is in the house.

NBC's Last Comic Standing airs Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET.

I'm glad Ralph dressed for the occasion because I think he could be the one saying his goodbyes tonight. The only thing more dated than Clinton jokes are Ralph's jokes about arm flaps and drunk uncles. Amy may have showed her youth and inexperience, but she still managed to be funnier than Ralph, who really disappointed me in his reaction to her win a few weeks ago. He showed that age and experience aren't always enough. I've enjoyed Mr. Harris' comedy over the years, but its time for him to retire those 1980s jokes for good.

I agree with AH. Ralph has probably been my least favorite of the finalists this season. It really bothered me before the last head-to-head when he did not even try in the last immunity challenge. It seems that if he does not have the perfect audience, he cannot perform. I also think both Doug Benson and Matt Kirschen were both deprived of their chance to be in the top 5 when the audience chose Ralph over them.

Ralph is by far my least favorite, which means that if this season follows the same trends as past seasons, Ralph will probably end up winning the whole thing. And by "past seasons," I mean seasons 1 and 4 (Dat and Josh Blue). I actually rooted for the winners of 2 and 3, Alonzo!

Bill Bellamy was singularly unfunny on last night's show. The Clinton jokes were nothing compared to his white people rant about Michael Vick and killing dogs.

It was kind of ironic reading this after already know the results. But, it's interesting hearing Alonzo's take on things. He is always great at giving the professional point of view on the business of comedy. I completely agreed with his assessment of Lavelle, John, and Gerry.

With Amy, yes they were stereotypical female jokes, but her delivery was awesome. I actually found her to be the funniest last week with Gerry as my #2. But, I also agree that her inexperience is starting to show through. And, while she is a very pretty girl, she looks so much like Jan Brady from the Brady Bunch movies, it's starting to distract me.:^O

As for Ralph, I think he is a class act all the way and he has had some of the funniest bits this season (I am still howling over the Jehovah Witness bit). But, I honestly thought that, in the last head-to head, Doug and Matt were both funnier than him (Doug was the funniest of the three). And last week, I thought the Auntie Arm Fat bit was WEAK. I told my husband after the show that, if it was just based on that performance, Ralph should be the one to go.

As for last night, I actually thought Amy was the weakest--she never seemed to hit it out of the park like she has in the past. The ex-boyfriend mime was funny, but the rest was a bit weak. John, initially one of my least favorites, was pretty darn clever and funny with that old kid songs bit. Lavelle was sort of funny with that Grizzly Bear bit, but I guess I want to see him do more jokes that don't involve food (or being food) in some way. Gerry, was solid. Nothing spectacular but nothing mediocre either I don't mean to damn him with faint praise, because it was good. It just wasn't as good as some of his other routines.

My guess would be Amy to go home this time, but I think she has a bright future ahead of her in comedy. As do all of the top 5.

I also want to add that I thought it was nice to see Doug again. I thought he did very well and showed why it could just as easily have been him in the top 5. I hope we get to see Matt again, because he is definitely a rising comedy star. It was hard to see him go.

I thought Lavelle should have left last night instead of Ralph. His comedy is always so dry and I don't think I've laughed once at anything he had to say. I'd be perfect for make me laugh. (I wish they would bring that back by the way!!) Amy did well but I love Gerry and John!!
