Supernatural University: Demon Powers, Motives, and Deals

BV CC SN brothers avi snu_01.gif
SPOILER WARNING!! This class contains speculations arising in part from season four spoilers revealed by Eric Kripke in his interview with TVGuide.com on 29 May 2008. If you are staying entirely spoiler-free, do not attend this class!! (Note: Lack of attendance at spoilery seminars will not reflect adversely on any student.)

I can’t resist thinking about Dean and Sam, and by extension, about Lilith, Ruby, and the war, and that leads to a speculative mythology exploration of demon powers, demon motives, and demon deals.

I've been having a few interesting computer problems today (I hate Word!), so the full class is posted over on my LJ, here.

OH Mary! We have so much to look forward to in October!

I too am hoping that we no longer see demons pin Sammy like a bug.

After sitting through your lecture, I have all these season opener scenarios runing through my head. From what I've read from The Great Kripkie so far, I'm going to sit back and wait for my socks to be blown off in season four.

Bring on the angst! I want the brothers back together as damaged as they ever were!

Mary, Mary, you're blowing me away again! You've got my little brain spinning with all the possibilities of what S4 is going to bring.

First- Holy Mackerel, I never once thought about the CRD saying way back when that she could bring Dad back, same as he was. After his body was so many pounds of charcoal. You're brilliant!

Up until now, I'd been speculating that maybe Dean was only mostly dead, and not completely dead, and that's how he got back into his body. But your hypothesis makes a whole lot more sense.

Second- What if Lilith, not Sam, were the one to initiate a deal, in an attempt to buy Sam off

Again, Holy Mackerel! Maybe as part of her deal to bring Dean back, she makes the requirement of Sam that he not develop his powers against her. That would explain Kripke's comment that Sam has not pursued the development of his abilities (that we know of).

Thanks for a most enjoyable lecture. You're giving my brain a workout!

P.S. Were you working in Word 2007? If you were, I feel your pain- I had to re-do my resume from scratch in that program, and it's awful!!:(You have my sympathies!

Glad folks are enjoying the class! My, but you two were out and about early (or should I say, late? *grin*)

I've also been wondering about the discoveries we're going to make about Mary this season, and how they might come about. One nasty thing that occurred to me was that info on Mary might have been part of the emotional torture inflicted on Dean in Hell. Wouldn't that be a zinger, when he starts to remember?

My problem was actually in Word 2003. I started the blog on my laptop, and then copied the file onto a flash drive to continue working on my desktop, under the ceiling fan and convenient to the laundry flipping around in the washer and dryer. Out of nowhere, Word decided suddenly that it couldn't save the file because it didn't exist, and not only did the stupid program crash, but it actually deleted the entire file off the flash drive. Poof! I managed to recover only the beginning of the file from the version saved on the laptop, along with the last three paragraphs of the section I'd been working on when it vanished, which I found in an otherwise gibberish recovered text file buried on my hard drive.

I'd have had this up quite a bit sooner if I hadn't had to recreate so much of it ...

Oh, man, that sucks! I bet some choice words were flying in your house when that happened!

About Mary- (not you, the other Mary-hee). My stomach just turned when I read that in your post. Knowing how Dean keeps her on a pedestal, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they used her and what she knew to torture him. Heck, they'll probably taunt him to with the fact that Sam knew stuff and never told him, either.

Dean is so truly and completely screwed.

Hey, guys - thought I'd let you know, the results of the Ben Bella Books Supernatural Smart Pop essay contest are out!

I learned last week that I wasn't a winner, but had been one of the finalists, which is pretty doggone cool! The real joy is that Ben Bella decided that they liked all the finalists' essays so much that they wanted to share all of them, not just the three winners who will be printed in the book, so those of us runners-up who gave permission will see our essays posted (roughly one a month) on the supernatural.tv site from now until the book gets published in March 2009. The first one posted is by a friend of mine from Starsky & Hutch fandom days, K. Hanna Korossy, who did a neat analysis on the use of families in Supernatural in an essay most appropriately entitled, "The Family Business: Families in Supernatural." There's a link to her essay at the bottom of the page announcing the winners; go read and have fun!

I'm very happy, because this means you'll eventually all get to read my entry, which would otherwise have languished in the reject bin. I'll consider it part of the Supernatural University curriculum ... *grin*

Hi Mary! Great class, thank you! I had been trying to figure out what would have happened to Dean's body if he is indeed dead and season 4 picks up months after the finale. How could I not remember the Crossroads Demon? That is one of my favorite episodes. ("I heard you were handsome, but you're just edible!")

So thanks for giving me a possible scenario on that to ponder. I do hate to think of Dean being resurrected that way though. There's something just not right about him not being the "original" that I can't get past right now. But however he comes back, I just want him back, and sooner than later!

Mary, I had a bunch of great observations to make & then read this: What if Lilith should decide that the only way to save herself from Sam is to give Dean back? What if Lilith, not Sam, were the one to initiate a deal, in an attempt either to buy Sam off or at least give him something to distract him from pursuing her, so that she could have time to repair her power position among the demon horde?

My brain just exploded. I can see this happening..."I'll bring Dean back, but you have to promise to let me go about my business"...as if the boys would just let her destroy the world. Maybe that's where part of the rift between them comes in to play?

While we know that Sam will be pretty paralyzed over Dean's death, I'm hoping that Bobby will be able to maintain a somewhat logical mindset & help Sam figure out just what switches were flipped When Lilith allowed the Hell Hounds to attack Dean.

About Dean coming back, maybe we'll get to see Tessa again?! Or the Trickster...seems to me he might be able to help out a little more (seeing as how he likes Dean).

Oh our poor, poor boys!!!!!!!! *clings to them*

Off-topic: any ideas about what the S4 title card will look like?!

I'm sorry you didn't get into the book Mary, but I had no doubts you'd finish high up there. Congratulations!

I'm guessing Hellfire...

but that was kind of done already with the S1 title card.

How about something to do with that Godawful spiderweb/floating maze thing Dean was hooked in?

Mary- I'm bummed you weren't a winner! But a finalist is still pretty cool. Do you know how many writers entered?

Mary,

AWESOME as always and speculation is oh so fun, I try to practice it as often as I can. Eric Kripke's hints has inspired me to write a fanfic about what could happen to Dean and I have him appearing unexpectedly by all concerned back on Earth, revealing new "talents" such as being able to throw Bobby and Sam against a wall himself and reading their emotions as well as having his recollections from Hell come in nightmare fashion so your speculations mirror my own. I LOVE your idea about Lillith making a deal with Sam about bringing Dean back to save herself. It's an amazing idea and totally plausible.

I liken Dean's return from Hell as like any soldier returning from some kind of imprisonment, suffering from his own Hellish version of Post-traumatic stress disorder. He will be inexorably changed, to think otherwise would be to completely negate putting him in Hell in the first place and shortchange what that kind of experience can do to a person. Clearly, Jensen will make the most of this with his AWESOME acting and I will have kleenex at the ready to experience every gut-wrenching moment.

Please continue the speculation and keep it alive and thriving. It will be all we will have to cling to from now until Season 4 premieres.

Thanks for keeping us going!!!

You're still driving that bus, Rappie! I know! You can just drive that bus over to where Dean is and pick him up and bring him back here. Might as well get acquainted with where we're going!

Susie- I'm with you, there's something very unsettling about the idea of Dean not being in his original packaging. I've become extremely fond of that flawless original packaging! I have no doubt that whatever the writers come up with, though, it will blow me away.:)
