Supernatural Un-Book Club Four-Parter

Okay, folks: I've posted my latest contribution to our buddy panns' wonderful Supernatural Un-Book Club site! I took on what I call Family in Four Parts: Dead Man’s Blood, Salvation, Devil’s Trap, and In My Time of Dying.

My focus had three parts: Daniel Elkins, the Colt, and the Winchester family dynamic. Hope you enjoy!

Hello Professor,

Oooh, my first SN UnBook Club!!!

Ah, DMB, Salvation, DT and IMTOD - a mini-epic within an epic; if there was every 4 episodes that I'd put in to try and hook new viewers it would be these. These episodes showcase the best parts of SN, family, sacrifice, the struggle between good and evil and choice. Salvation and DT were actually my introduction into the Supernatural world, and so they hold a special place in my heart.

Self-sacrifice is lesson taught best by example, and it runs in the Winchester family.

I think it was Ridley C. James (a wonderful fic writer) who once wrote that the Winchesters seemed to be in a competition with themselves NOT to be the last one standing, and I think that truer words where never spoken. *sigh* With the amount that John demanded from his boys, I'm guessing that living with mistakes and failures is something that neither Sam and Dean ever really learned, and it breaks my heart to think that sometimes these boys only see what they couldn't do as to all the good that they've already done.

I'll end with saying that S4 will be here sooner than we probably know, and that what's revealed in S4 will once again give us a new appreciation of these episodes and all the things they told us and put into motion.

Umm, error admission and correction ...

Okay: I have to confess to an error. In my wee little essay above, I referred to Dead Man's Blood as our first clue that John had deliberately withheld information from his journal. I have realized that was a boo-boo; I momentarily forgot that we learned in Something Wicked that John had left out of the journal the whole Fort Douglas encounter with the shtriga, along with any information on the beastie. (Personally, I always thought he'd done that because he was ashamed of what happened and how he had reacted to it, lashing out at Dean and then not knowing how to mend what he'd broken, but hey ...)

So I guess that Elkins and vampires makes the second omission. :)

I think that John did a lot of editing to his journal before he left it behind for Dean in the pilot episode. It would also explain why Dean couldn't figure out some of the entries.

I’ve often wondered what happened to Elkins’ journal once this adventure was over, and whether the boys ever found time to read it – and if they might have found mentions of John in it, to teach them things they never knew about their Dad.

That’s a very good point! I’ve also wondered what happens to other journals when their owners die. Do they pass them on to apprentices? Friends? Do they end up in estate sales? I wonder if there is anyone out there that collects old journals.

I’m afraid he will. Self-sacrifice is lesson taught best by example, and it runs in the Winchester family.

I’m with Whimsy. That’s a very scary thought.

These episodes really set the platform for the next couple of seasons. It shows the family unit, flawed as it is, functioning as a whole, and shows that with a member missing, it is less than a whole. I know the boys have forged a team with the two of them, but in the first season, BDW was always present somehow. Whether he was texting them information, or calling them and telling them where to go, he was still out there supporting them.

Looking at the next two seasons, it kind of feels that the boys are trying to regain some equilibrium, but have not been given the time or space to do so. Watching Dean’s reaction to possibly having his father’s guidance back in Long Distance Call just proved to me that the foundation of the Winchester Team is still reeling from the consequences of John’s decision in IMTOD.

Thank you, Mary, for a wonderful addition to the SN Un-Book Club. Excellent job, as always!!!

And finally,

That would mean that it’s time for the movie to start shooting.

Yes, please!!

Laceym, what a great idea! I hadn't thought of that!

As I posted on your LJ--
An un book club what a wondeful idea.
Self sacrifice seems to be the corner stone of the Winchester family, I am also concerned as to what Sam will do to save Dean.
The glimpse of the family dynamics, and your observations of the change in their dynamic was very insightful. I now have to go back and rewatch them.

Mary- I'm a few days late but I just wanted to let you know that I was really looking forward to your addition to the Un-book club.

I read and really enjoyed what you had to say. As always, you make me think deeper thoughts about the show that I love so much.

Thanks,
Brit

Well, now you've got me thinking about self-sacrifice and journals. Yes, for the Winchesters, self-sacrifice is what makes the world go 'round, to be sure, and your wonderful essay demonstrates that perfectly. It is a scary thought to wonder what these men won't do for each other, isn't it?

As far as the journals, I've honestly never noticed Dean with a black journal of his own, so thanks for the Something Wicked tip- I'll go and check that out. Also- Sam being the methodical, research-oriented one is sure to be keeping a journal somewhere- I'd love to get a glimpse of it one of these epsisodes.
